We are a small project situated in central South Africa in a town called Bloemfontein where we are home to cheetahs, lions, leopards, servals, caracals, African wildcats, wolves, meerkats and a tiger. Because we could never turn an animal that needs help away we also take in rescued animals like antelope, porcupines and birds to name a few. Our resident animals are currently in captivity as our long term focus to conserve the feline species that currently, and potentially, face extinction. Our focus is on Cheetah breeding. There are currently less than 10,000 cheetahs left in the world (including cheetahs in captivity).
Cheetah Experience’s concept is to breed with cheetahs in captivity and then to one day be able to release them back into a ‘protected’ wild. We are a registered non-profit organisation and at this stage we are looking for land and funding to complete the final stage of our project. Although our animals are captive, we still like to provide them with as much enrichment and stimulation as possible. This involves allowing them out of their enclosures to walk in the veld or to just explore the surrounding outside their enclosure. For the animals own safety, we do uses harnesses and leads for this activity.
Although releasing captive cheetahs is our main focus, we have also started a leopard and serval breeding project as well. Many of our native big and smaller cats are at risk of becoming endangered due to habitat loss and hunting either for export or due to the fact that will prey on domestic farm animals. It is our goal to help keep up numbers and introduce bloodlines so that one day we will have a viable population for release when their native lands are protected.
