Hand rearing orphaned cubs PDF Print

Cubs need to be fed regularly, just as they would be in the wild. Cubs need to be fed regularly, just as they would be in the wild. On arrival, the babies are weighed and examined thoroughly, in order to determine whether they have any wounds or disabilities. Each baby has a chart on which all details are recorded.

The amount of milk given to each one is determined by its weight. The amount fed at a time is also determined by how many feedings it will receive during a 24 hour period.

They drink a milk formula called Espilac, which is imported and very, very expensive. Together with this, vitamins and calcium are given to them.  After feeding cubs need to be stimulated to urinate and excrete After feeding cubs need to be stimulated to urinate and excrete

After each feeding, they have to be stimulated to urinate and excrete. In nature, the mother licks them and eats the secretions. This not only keeps the den clean, but she builds an immunity that is transmitted to the cubs.

All wild animals are inoculated just like ordinary pets.  These inoculations are critical to the survival of the cubs. Hand rearing orphaned animals takes a lot of time, love and patience Hand rearing orphaned animals takes a lot of time, love and patience

At the age of approximately 7-8 weeks they start eating a little meat together with the milk.  At the age of 4-5 months they are put on a diet of meat (usually chicken) and water.
